Who can enter Azerbaijan without a visa?

Azerbaijan, a country located between Europe and Asia, attracts many travellers thanks to its rich culture and breathtaking landscapes. If you are planning to travel to this fascinating country, it is essential to know the visa rules and the different categories of people who can enter Azerbaijan without a visa, as well as the conditions that apply.

Nationals of CIS member countries

Among those who can travel to Azerbaijan without a visa are citizens of member countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This is an organisation comprising several countries of the former Soviet Union, of which Azerbaijan is a member. Citizens of these countries do not need a visa to travel to Azerbaijan. Here is the list of countries concerned:

  • 🇦🇲 Armenia (out of conflict)
  • 🇧🇾 Belarus
  • 🇬🇪 Georgia
  • 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan
  • 🇰🇬 Kyrgyzstan
  • 🇲🇩 Moldova
  • 🇷🇺 Russia
  • 🇹🇯 Tajikistan
  • 🇹🇲 Turkmenistan
  • 🇺🇦 Ukraine
  • 🇺🇿 Uzbekistan

Note that the authorised length of stay for nationals of these countries varies according to the bilateral agreements between Azerbaijan and each Member State, and is generally around 90 days.

Holders of residence permits in certain countries

Another category of people who can enter Azerbaijan without a visa concerns holders of a valid residence permit issued by a member country of the Schengen Area, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

⚠️ To benefit from this exemption, you must also have a confirmed return air ticket and be in possession of medical insurance covering the entire duration of your stay.

Passengers in transit

People in transit through Azerbaijan are also visa-free, provided they do not leave the airport's international transit zone and their stopover does not exceed 72 hours. However, it is advisable to check with your airline whether it allows visa-free travellers to make a stopover in Azerbaijan, as some airlines may require a transit visa even for a short stay.

Sports and cultural events

In certain cases, Azerbaijan offers temporary visa exemptions for participants and spectators at international sporting and cultural events. These exemptions are generally granted on presentation of an official invitation or entry ticket for the event concerned. Be sure to check the event's website for detailed information on visa-free entry requirements.

Other nationalities

For nationals of countries not mentioned in this article, it is necessary to obtain a visa before entering Azerbaijan. The most common procedure is to apply for a e-visa, also known as ASAN Visa, which can be obtained online. This electronic visa is valid for a tourist, business or medical stay of up to 30 days.

The application process is quick and easy, but it is advisable to apply well in advance to avoid any problems.
